Promises Yet To Keep
On August 26, 1920, tens of millions of women won voting rights, the greatest expansion of democracy in U.S. history. Yet 105 years later, women still have not achieved full equality, and face ongoing and increasing threats of discrimination, violence, loss of bodily autonomy, and restrictions on voting rights. West Pinellas NOW members celebrate Women’s Equality Day and the enactment of the 19th Amendment, which barred states from excluding women from the ballot based solely on the basis of their sex. Beth Hovind, the vice president at North Pinellas League of Women’s Voter will be our speaker for the night. Women’s Equality Day is a celebration of the past, a recognition of the present, and a call to action for the future. It’s a reminder that progress is possible when we unite in the pursuit of a fair and just society. By acknowledging the achievements, addressing the challenges, and continuing to push for change, we honor the legacy of those who fought for our rights while paving the way for generations to come.
Stronger Together

About Beth Hovind
People who know Beth have often heard her mantra: “My goal is to eliminate childhood poverty in my lifetime.” Beth continues to gather voices of support for low-income housing, one of her priorities. Beth, who led North Pinellas League’s Poverty, Health Care, and Juvenile Justice Committee for seven years, has passionately advocated for the under-served. In 2016, she hosted hot topic meetings on local housing issues, and in 2019, the Poverty, Health Care, and Juvenile Justice Committee received grant funds to sponsor a conference, “Reducing Poverty In Florida – Legislative Solutions.” More than 70 representatives of local and state organizations participated. Beth continues to do good work toward her life goal.
